3 Days 2 Nights Yogyakarta Food & Discovery Itinerary Day Two:

Day Two Morning

Borobodur Sunrise Tour (Manohara)

We woke up around 4 am, took the tour bus to Borobodur Sunrise Tour. We reached Borobodur around 5 am. After we got our entry tickets, we listed to the briefing, got our torchlight and climbed up to Borobodur.

jogja borobodur morning

In reality there are hundreds of tourists in the site waiting for sunrise so you have get your best spot. You can bring your tripod but do not climb the stupas or stand on the stupas.

The sunrise view is breath taking as you can see the plain is surrounded by the morning mist. As the sun rise, the crowd started to disperse and that is the best time to take photographs of Borobodur. The tourists like vampires, the sun scares them away and that is the ideal time to take empty shots of the temple.

jogja borobodur buddha

Take your time to take your best shots here and by 7 or 8 am, the temple is almost empty. Expect to spend at least two hours including the wait for the sunrise. We had our money shots and we loved the view and how they clean and preserved the temple. This is a must visit in Yogyakarta.

There are also snacks and restaurants included with the Borobudur tour in the café at the entrance. Time to rehydrate before the next destination.

Borobudur Bike Tour by Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa

The bike (cycling) tour is fun and easy. There are no hills and the paths are mostly on flat lands so everyone can enjoy this cycling tour.

jogja bike tour

We prefer the ladies bicycle as it is smaller with a front basket (you can keep your things) and if you can cycle, you can ride on the Andong (horse carriage).

jogja bike tour scenery

The cycling tour includes sceneries of paddy fields, villages as well as the locals. This is something you can’t do in towns or cities and we love the wind and the natural smell of the greens. The cycling tour takes roughly an hour.

Borobudur Bike Tour

Package: IDR 450,000 per pax (minimum 4 pax; excludes transportation from Yogyakarta  to Borobudur)

Another snack break with two activities. Either you want to create your own pottery or print your own batik. Both are fun activities and learn how to create your own art pieces.

Cultural lunch in Wanurejo Village, Magelang

The cultural lunch in Wanurejo Village is organized by the tourism board. It comes with traditional dances called ‘Le Ak Dance’.

The ‘Lek Ak’ dance

You get to taste local food here in Wanurejo Village while enjoying the musical dance performance by locals. What we find unique is the dance, the costume and also the masks they used. We didn’t know much about the history but this is our first time watching the performance. This was an eye opener for us.

Royal Tea Ceremony (Patehan) at Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel

jogja Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel tea ceremony

The main reason to stay in Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel is they offer ‘Patehan’ or the royal high tea ceremony. It is a kraton tradition in which the Sultans of Yogyakarta drink a special kind of tea in the morning or afternoon. The royal rea ceremony is held at Pendopo Agung which included a walking tour.

Sunset at Ratu Boko (Kraton Palace)

If there is a sunrise at Borobudur, then there should be a sunset at Ratu Boko. The name Ratu Boko is derived from a legendary king in a local folklore. The remains are one of the stone gates and the ruins of the great past. The complex unique have both Buddhist and Hindu structures on the same site.

jogja ratu boko melissa sunset

The money shot is to take the sunset through the last remaining stone gates but like other popular tourist attractions, there are dozens of other tourists wanting the same shot.

ratu boko sunset

You can see Prambanan and Mount Merapi in the distance and you will be mesmerised by the magic moment as well as the sunset at Ratu Boko.

Last Minute Shopping at Jalan Malioboro

This is an interesting place recommended by our local friends. There is a shopping street in Yogyakarta  called Jalan Malioboro. It is located in the between Yogyakarta  Kraton and Mount Merapi and this place is busy.

jogja Jalan Malioboro shopping with mel

You can find many horse carriages here instead of taxis. Most of the shirts here are priced at RM 25,000 and above which is quite cheap. You can bargain with them if you purchase more.

Check out the local batik stores as you can find many really good design, materials and sizes. It cost a fraction than what we can get in our country.
