JR Naraeki Station or Kintetsu Nara Station? Which is Better?

Traveling to Nara for the first time? Not sure which train to take and which station to stop? There are two main train stations in Nara, either JR Naraeki Station or Kintetsu Nara Station? If you are planning for a day trip, we will recommend you to stop at Kintetsu Nara Station. If you are holding a JR Pass then you have to settle for JR Naraeki Station.

Why we prefer Kintetsu Nara Station?

JR Naraeki Station (left) and Kintetsu Nara Station (right).

The main reason Kintetsu Nara Station is better as it is located just next to most of the main attractions of Nara. Kofukuji Temple is just a few steps away and you can actually do a walking day trip to Kasuga Taisha Shrine and Todaiji Temple. You will pass by Nara Park and Nara National Museum in between. The Kintetsu Nara Station is also next to Higashimuki Shopping Street.

There is some information you should know. For those who are using Kansai Thru Pass, you can use your pass to come to Kintetsu Nara Station from Osaka. For those who is using ICOCA card, there won’t be any issues for sure. There is a Tourist Information Counter in Kintetsu Nara Station and you can get a free Nara Map from there. Otherwise, use Google Map to navigate your way around Nara.

We went to Nara twice, first time on 2012 and second time last week. We really enjoyed the walk, the scenery and also the wild deer. Please take note that the wild deer will eat your map or money as they think it is food. Just beware of that. We hope this will help you in planning your trip to Nara Japan. Thank you for reading.
