We ordered the Grilled Rib Cut for (ARS 33/US$8.70/RM27.80). My friend Chuan ordered extra 2 eggs for it. The Patagonian region of Argentina is very popular for its grill food and its beef. The grilled rib cut is grilled to perfection and it was well seasoned and the meat was tender. In short it was delicious!

Next we ordered additional Mixed Grill for two for (ARS 62/US$16.30/RM52). The ribs were well grilled and the sausages were good.

I prefer to eat the mixed grill without additional seasoning or sauces. It is good by itself. Dining at Solar De Tejeda offers a great night view of the historical buildings and monuments. They have menus in English and well mannered waiters and waitresses. This place is highly recommended!

I was there a few months ago for a dinner with my Argentine friends. As Indian food is quite common in Malaysia, it is a different case in Argentina.

We ordered the Jingha Palao (ARs 55/ US 14.50/ RM 46). It is the rice mixed with prawn in a combination of spices and other ingredients. The gravy is creamy and thick with heavily presence of coconut milk.

Lamb Briyani (ARs 55/ US 15.30/ RM 49) is another delightful dish. The lamb is cooked with creamy and thick gravy and it compliments with the fragrant briyani rice. It is hard to believe to have such good Indian food in Buenos Aires.

West Bengal is also well-known for its Italian food. With their beautiful setting, West Bengal is ideal for posh dining and fine dining goers with excellent Indian food. Thanks Hugo and Shakhira for the dinner. =)

Established in 1858, with the history of more than 150 years old, Café Tortoni caters both the locals and the tourists. Located at Avenida de Mayo 825 ,Buenos Aires City, the café or coffee shop is accessible by public transport such as public busses or the subway.

Some of the metal signs in front of the cafe
As I walked out of the Florida Street, I asked my way to Tortoni. Though most Argentines don’t speak English, the word “Tortoni” definitely helps as most people knew about it.
I walked pass the coffee shop, silly me.

Can you read Spanish?

The entrance of the cafe: Door is huge

As I realized, I stood in front of the grand “Café Tortoni”. The huge large door separated me and a lovely breakfast, yet I was spending sometime outside taking pictures of the metal signs/plates.

As I walked in, the interior was vintage, cultural and posh.

I was greeted by a well dressed waiter who got me to a seat. Like me, the other patrons couldn’t stop snapping pictures of the interior.

Check out the interior, very well maintained

Restaurante Chino, Tenedor Libre-Parilla Libre: A Chinese Restaurant in Rio Gallegos, Santa Cruz, ARGENTINA

The nearest town to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier is Rio Gallegos. Many opted to stay one night at Rio Gallegos for the Perito Moreno Glacier tour, as the tour usually commenced in the morning. In Rio Gallegos town, the street is ever busy with restaurants, shops and also a casino. Shopping in this part of the region promised fine goods from Patagonia region, most notable the Patagonia wines and chocolates.

Despite the fact of the famous Patagonia grill lambs available almost at every restaurants, there is a Chinese “influenced” restaurant among them offering a slightly different menu. The place is called Restaurante Chino, walking distance from the Rio Gallegos town’s main road.

Did I see Chinese Fried Rice? It was everybody’s favorite that evening

Praises must be given to our local tour guide, Bobby for bringing us to that place. As we had been travelling for days in Patagonia region, having fried noodles was more than a blessing. The reason I mentioned Chinese influenced because the wife of the owner is a Chinese and most food were cooked by her.

Stir fried food and others available too

Can you spot the stir fried noodles?

Like most Chinese restaurants, Restaurante Chino charged a fixed price for its buffet style food. Drinks will be charged differently. The restaurant also served the famous grill Patagonia lambs. The food was good and the price was very reasonable.

The grill section which includes grill lamb, sausages and others. It’s a buffet, eat all you can!

So if you are in Rio Gallegos and craved for something different, Restaurante Chino is something you can consider.
Thank you for reading.

During one of the 9 days stay in Ushuaia, I wandered to this restaurant called Tante Sara Cafe & Bar. After having a few rounds in the casino nearby, it was time for a good lunch.

Rightfully, Tante Sara Cafe & Bar was around the corner. Located at the busiest road of Ushuaia, San Martin, Tante Sara can be easily spotted. I was greeted by the waiters and immediately they taken my order. Service was good despite how packed the restaurant was at that moment of time.

One of the best thing about Argentina is their chocolate drink. They offered liquor based chocolate drink. I had cognac chocolate which was really nice but this one was equally good. Named as the Chocolate Tante Sara, the hot chocolate was mixed with grated chocolate, Bailey’s and cream. I loved the creamy texture on the top layer as well the rich chocolate taste that was so addictive. Not forgetting hints of Bailey’s that made this hot chocolate unforgettable for my own account. Drink cost at 17 Argentine Pesos (US 4.5).

I ordered the Tanta Sara Hamburger. The hamburger came with the egg, bacon, egg, tomato, fries and the calamari rings. Unlike in Malaysia which is everything came with chili sauce, they usually provide tomato ketchup for serving. I usually loved to eat it “clean” to try out the real taste of the hamburger. I wouldn’t say the hamburger was the best but it was definitely good. Portion was just nice. The hamburger was priced at 30 Argentine pesos ( US 8).

With good and prompt service, clean and good environment, Tante Sara is definitely a good recommendation. Shall I say more?

Silly me. After staying in Argentina for more than 25 days, only I realized that Argentina has their own hot chili sauce, the chimichurri sauce. As a Malaysian, our country is blessed with heavily spiced food and sauces.

Though I couldn’t take hot food as much as my wife, Rachel. My taste bud and my crave for hot sauce, is always there.

While having lunch in La Boca at the last few days of my Argentine visit, I was introduced to this hot sauce by a fellow Malaysian who resides there, Shakhira. The word itself sounds cute, chimichurri.

Though is not as hot as our Malaysian sauce but the oily hot Argentine sauce put a presence in me with its distinctive heavily spiced flavor. My curiosity about this sauce made me to search for more information about this sauce.

It was said a British by the name of “Jimmy McCurry” who was the first to prepare the sauce. As the it was hard to pronounce the “Jimmy McCurry”, it was later on called chimichurri. Read more about it here – source Wikipedia.org

While its famous for its green color, the chimichurri sauce I had was the red color version.

Chimichurri is made from finely chopped parsley, minced garlic, vegetable oil or olive oil, white or red vinegar, and red pepper flakes. Additional flavorings such as paprika (pimenton dulce), oregano, cumin, thyme, cilantro (coriander leaf), lemon, and bay leaf (laurel), and in the red version, tomato and red bell pepper may also be added. – Wikipedia.org

I wished I knew more about the chimicurri sauce earlier during my Argentine visit. Probably I could have tried the green color version. Or probably I did had one as it might be used in the meat marination. Well, no matter how, I couldn’t be disappointed that much as I found a few recipes about chimicurri HERE.

Remember to order the chimichurri sauce just in case you crave for one. Thanks for reading.

Fresh King Crab at La Cantina Fueguina de Freddy, Ushuaia, ARGENTINA

Ushuaia, Argentina is always known as the lowest and southernmost city in the world. Yet, the town is also popular for another good thing. Seafood. It’s undeniable that the city is famous for its fresh king crab! Since there’s so many of them, we visited one of the restaurants on the main road of San Martin. La Cantina Fueguina de Freddy is located at the heart of the busy San Martin road. Located just 2 blocks away from the seaport, San Martin is the busiest street of Ushuaia. After checking the menu on the entrance, me and the rest wasted no time to order our first fresh king crab in Ushuaia, Argentina.

It’s nothing like holding a fresh King crab. The nice owner allowed me to go to the kitchen to catch one of the king crab for this picture. Then the owner weighed the king crab as like video above. It’s huge! Video is in HD! Cooking the crab fresh is the only option for my opinion to taste the freshness of the crab. After waited for around 15 min, the huge king crab came. The crab came with “aros” (rice), with a bit of salad and sauce. Like you can see, its so huge, how do we eat them? Check it out below (video in HD). The waiter made it so simple and easy. Well, as you can see the crab was still hot and fresh. Video in HD. A short video of me in HD. Three of us enjoyed the king crab very much. The meat was soft, not so tender but super uber freshness. Hence, the crab was so juicy and we ate the crab without any sauce. Amazing stuff! Never thought having King crab fresh is so nice. Lovely experience! An old couple who saw us ordering the crab and they ordered their own too.

After a length full session of king crab, this is what was left of the crab. Well, it was a heavy and satisfying lunch of the juicy crab. The restaurant itself was cozy with heater,to keep ourselves warm from the chilly weather outside. Service was excellent and pricing as below: Receipt

The crab cost around 250 pesos per kilogram. The crab weighed around 2kg plus so it cost around 515 pesos. It would be nice to accompany the crab with white wine, but since it was a lunch, we save it for other sessions. We had wine almost every lunch and dinner here, it’s so cheap in Argentina. The Malbec here is very good and popular. There will be more reviews on restaurants and cafe in Ushaia, Argentina. If you are this part of the world, King crab must be a must to order. Trust me, even in Buenos Aires having King crab is tough!

The entrance of the lovely restaurant. From outside, the restaurant looks really lovely. Tables and chairs and the area was very clean.

The common starters for most of the Argentinian restaurants, breads in the basket. Different variations differs from one to another outlet. Sometimes, they would have olive oil or vinegar for this. Sometimes, they only serve plain breads in the basket. One thing for sure, Argentinian serving time is relatively slow compare to our Malaysian serving time. Our dish came around 10pm!

Not sure about the name. The starter was the sweet bread topped with cheese and sugar. It was hard on the top layer and chewy.

Beef ribs was grilled to perfect timing. The grill here are often dry but they maintain the tenderness of the meat. Portion is usually huge.

Grilled salmon fish was not so “happening” after all. Even though it was nicely cook but it didn’t have a significant difference than the usual grilled salmon fish.

Roask pork with orange and beer. As I read this in the menu, my curiosity made me order this dish. Then, only I realised that it’s the common roast pork with extra toppings of orange and beer. The taste was decent, nothing to shout about. Food presentation as usual was good.

In general, the best part of Happening would be the amazing scenic view of Puetro Madero. The food was generally decent to my own preferences. The place is more expensive than the usual restaurants in Buenos Aires. That’s why the service was top class. One weird thing I noticed was, the started their dinner as late as 10 pm. Today, I went to another restaurant and the guest only came in at 11pm! It’s sort of like their culture, maybe. Anyways, more will come soon as I travel daily to different locations of Argentina and Chile!
