Supper at Ebeneezer’s Kebab and Pizzeria: Halal Food in Hong Kong

This year, I travelled to Hong Kong twice and gratefully I had the chance to visit some of the Halal restaurants there. I know it is tough to find Halal restaurants in Hong Kong so I created the list of Halal restaurants in Hong Kong. To read it in Malay or Bahasa Melayu, click HERE.

Previously, I have blogged about the famous Halal Islam Food in Kowloon City and also Halal Popeye Fried Chicken at Hong Kong International Airport. Today, I am going to blog about this place in Tsim Sha Tsui. Thus, this means wherever you go in Hong Kong, you know at least there will be a proper Halal dining place to eat.

I travelled to Hong Kong for the first time in my life this January and I stayed at Guang Dong Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. The surrounding area near the hotel was lively with pubs, discos, restaurants, cafes and convenience stores.

Together with my Muslim friends, we were hungry and looking for a Halal restaurant for supper. Conveniently, the Ebenezeer’s Kebab and Pizzeria is located opposite Guang Dong Hotel. It was pure luck we found the restaurant.

The restaurant is small in size as spaces in Hong Kong are dreadfully expensive. The price of the food is reasonable with dinner set varies from HKD 61 (RM 24 / US$ and above.

The nasi biryani comes with option of lamb, chicken, chicken tikka with samosa and mango lassi. The price of nasi biryani set was HKD 66 (RM 27 / US$ 9). The taste is similar to the ones in Malaysia and it comes with fresh vegetables and samosa as side dishes.

I ordered the Lamb Kebab with samosa and mango lassi for HKD 69 (RM 28 / US$ 9.30). The size of the kebab is relatively larger than what we have in Malaysia. The kebab comes with generous amount and meat and it was really good.

We enjoyed the supper as much as we enjoyed the atmosphere of Tsim Sha Tsui night life. After supper, we just walked across the road back to the hotel. There was nothing more convenient than that.

Open since 1950, this award winning restaurant is very popular with locals and also recommended by Malaysia private TV Station Astro Oasis.

Many top Hong Kong food critics like Tou Tou and Choi Lan have given thumbs up to this restaurant. The restaurant is very popular with its Fried Beef Dumpling or Fried Beef Cake. There is one plate on every table as I noticed.

We started off the Xiao Long Bau or Steamed Beef Dumpling. Xiao Long Bau is a very popular dish from Shanghai, China. The Islam Food version is to replace the pork with beef. I never had a Halal Xiao Long Bau before and I must say, it is almost as good as the original. It is sold in a set of 4 pcs for HKD 26 / RM 10.40 / US 3.50.

Fried Ling Fillet with Celery (HKD 102 / RM 40.5 / US$ 34).This is a very simple stir fry dish. It’s a very common Chinese dish and it is available in Malaysia using a different type of fish. However, for a Halal version, it was my first.

Cold dish is very popular in traditional Chinese cuisine. Surprisingly, Islam Food substitute it with beef and offers Assorted Cold Dish (Shank/ Tripe /Tendon / Chicken / Ox-Tongue) for HKD 172 / RM 68.80 / US$ 23. Don’t be feared by the shank, tripe or even ox-tongue, it tastes good. Just pretend you missed reading it in the menu.

Next, will be another Chinese specialty dish. The Hot and Sour Soup (HKD 52 / RM 20.80 / US$ 7) or better known as Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup is a mouth-watering dish that will ignite your appetite.

Lastly, it was their signature dish, the Veal Goulash. The Veal Goulash was selling at 2 pieces for HKD 22 /RM 8.80 /US$ 2.90.

The skin of the Veal Goulash is similar to the “gouza” (gauzi) skin but thicker. The filling is the juicy cooked veal. Becareful while biting on the Veal Goulash as the inner sauce might spill out. The combination of the dry crispy skin and the juicy inner veal makes this signature this addictive and tasty. Thus, because of this dish, the restaurant is acknowledged by many magazines, newspapers and even food critics. This is a must try dish.

If you are looking for more Chinese oriented Halal Food in Hong Kong, this cannot be missed!

How long would you wait for your dim sum breakfast or “yum char” in Hong Kong? Half an hour, one hour, 2 hours or more? My recent trip to Hong Kong with Rachel brought us to this famous dim sum place by the name of Tim Ho Wan. Located in Mongkok, it is just walking distance from our hotel, Stanford Hotel in Soy Street Mongkok.

I went there early before 11 am to take our ticket number. Due to the overwhelming people, I was asked to come back after one and half hour later. That was before 11 am. So then after 12.30 we came back and waited for another 15 min before our turn. There, there are other customers who were asked to come back after 2 and half hours! Don’t get me wrong, the shop is very small so there are only limited tables and chairs. Thus, the waiters and manager there are very friendly. Before we went in, we can actually place our order on the order sheet.

The dim sum is cooked based on orders. They don’t serve ready-made dim sums like in most restaurants in Malaysia.

Tim Ho Wan is rated One Michelin Star and it is said the cheapest in the world. Why cheapest? Most of the dim sum in Tim Ho Wan is lesser than HKD 19 (US$ 2.7, RM 8),

The “chiong fun” (vermicelli roll) caught our attention as we sat very near to the kitchen.

We started off our late breakfast with the Char Siew Chiong Fun (vermicelli roll with BBQ pork) for HKD 15 / RM 6 / US$ 2. You can tell the good is the technique by looking at the semi transparent vermicelli skin and the thickness of it. The Char Siew Chiong Fun comes with the soy sauce.

The Har Kau (Steamed Fresh Shrimp Dumplings) was next. It is the most expensive item in the restaurant which is HKD 19 / RM 7.60 / US$ 2.50 per plate. The Steamed Fresh Shrimp Dumplings has a very thin semi transparent layer of skin and generous amount of prawns. I was told by the waitress it is best eaten without any additional sauce.

Beancurd roll is one of my preferred dim sum. In Malaysia, beancurd roll is usually cooked and dip with sweet sauce. However, the beancurd roll there compliments with Portuguese sauce. They are selling at HKD 16 / RM 6.40 / US$ 2.2. The Portuguese sauce is very similar to light butter curry sauce. This is interesting.

The star of the day should go to their baked bun with BBQ pork (HKD 14/ RM 5.60 / US$ 1.90) or Char Siew Bao. Unlike the usual char siew bao, Tim Ho Wan’s version is baked not steamed. The crispiness on the top outer layer similar to “polo” bun and the filling is stuffed with juicy BBQ pork. This is really good and probably the best of the rest.

With complete our late breakfast with the Pan Fried Turnip Cake for HKD 10 / RM 4 / US$ 1.3. There is nothing to shout about for this.

Overall, the food is the good and it lives up to their One Michelin Star reputation. The total bill came to less than HKD 200. In short, it is dirt cheap. Despite the popularity, Tim Ho Wan has more international customers than the locals. Probably the locals couldn’t stand the long waiting queue. For my opinion, go there as early as possible or take a ticket number and go to shop in Mongkok while waiting for your turn.

Located at 120 Parkes Street, it is near the Nathan Road and Jordan Road.

The shop was surprisingly quiet even on lunch hour. We ordered the house specialty Baked Bird’s Nest Tarts for HKD 8 (US$0.80/RM3.20) each. We were pretty excited at that time because it was our first time having a baked bird’s nest tarts. However our excitements were short-lived.

The tarts were cold. It was around noon time, it is impossible for the tarts to be cold. Then as I took a bite, I couldn’t taste anything at all. The bird’s nest filling is tasteless. Maybe I was wrong so I asked Rachel and she said the same thing. There is presence of the bird’s nest on the top layer of the filling but the whole thing was a disappointment. We suspect they served us overnight tarts instead of fresh ones. Regardless, it was a huge let down.

We also ordered the Double Boiled Bird’s Nest in Whole Coconut for HKD 45 (RM18/US$6). This was much better. The soup was strongly fragrant of coconut juice with hints of bird’s nest. This was enjoyable at least.

Overall, the baked bird’s nest tart was a huge disappointment for us. We took a taxi from Mongkok for their tarts and it was completely a waste of time. Luckily, the double boiled bird’s nest in whole coconut was much better. For unknown reasons, they served us cold bird’s nest tarts and for that, we wouldn’t go there again.

If you are looking for Halal or Muslim food in in Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok Airport 赤鱲角機場), check this out. I stumbled upon the Popeye Fried Chicken at Level 7 while waiting for my flight back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This Popeye Fried Chicken outlet is certified HALAL with HALAL logo by the Hong Kong Halal Authorities. This is the only Popeye Fried Chicken outlet in Hong Kong.

A set of meal starts from HKD 26 (US$ 4 / RM 11) which is very cheap for “airport food”. I did a review on Malaysia’s Popeye Fried Chicken 2 years ago. Read the review HERE. However, Hong Kong menu is slightly different than the ones we have here in Malaysia. The quality and taste of the fried chicken is comparable to KFC and some might prefer Popeye Fried Chicken as it slightly less oily.

I hope this could help out some Muslim friends while traveling in Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok Airport 赤鱲角機場). Hong Kong is a food paradise and I will introduce a few more Halal certified restaurants in Hong Kong for our Muslim friends and readers. Stay tuned!

The Taiwanese Famous Hot Star Fried Chicken is now available in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. This popular fried chicken is origin from the famous Shilin Night Market from Taipei, Taiwan. Established in 1992, Hot Star Fried Chicken popularity has expanded to Hong Kong.

Last week, when I was in Hong Kong, I stumbled upon the Hot Star Fried Chicken. The shop is located at G/F, Tat Lee Building, 2Y Sai Yeung Choi Street South (旺角西洋菜南街2Y號達利大廈地下) at the cross junction of Dundas Street. I was having “smelly beancurd” next door and thought of having the hot fried chicken on that chilly evening but I did not due to the long queue. I was rushing at that time as well for a proper dinner.

The popular big size Hot Star fried chicken comes with original and spicy taste. Each Hot Star big size fried chicken cost HKD 25 (RM 12 / US$ 4). It was really a nice time having a hot big size fried chicken in the weather of 11 degree Celsius. Hence, having such a great reputation and history in Taiwan, there is no deny that Hot Star Fried Chicken is popular among the locals in Hong Kong.

Halal Food Restaurants Directory for Muslim Visitors in Hong Kong, China
