The last time we went to Langkawi, we spent quite a number of days there relaxing and spending quality times together. One of the memorable things we did is the Langkawi mangrove tour. The mangrove tour can be arranged with the hotel lobby, in the airport or the local tours.

The tour took almost ½ day of our schedule. The van picked us up and sent us to the jetty. We were then transferred to the long tail boat or long “sampan”.

The price for the mangrove tour varies but I will recommend travelers to hire the whole boat if they have a small group of friends than rather buying per person ticket. It’s cheaper that way.

1. Mangrove Forest Sight Seeing

What is a mangrove tour with mangrove sight seeing. The beauty of long tail boat is it can get really close to the mangrove trees. The boat will propel slowly through the Kilim River. Sometimes, we need duck to avoid the branches of the mangrove trees. For city dwellers, this could be an eye opener and for eco tourists, this is a must.

Up, close and personal. We can get really as close as possible to the mangrove trees.

A few tourists asked me about Langkawi during our (Rachel and I) way back from Cambodia. It seems to be Langkawi is very popular with the European and the North American tourists. They seems to have a lot of interest and knowledge in Langkawi and Penang, maybe Tourism Malaysia did they part well there. Langkawi now, is very much different than it used to be. My first trip to Langkawi dated bac k to 1990s, where the tourist attractions were only the Mahsuri tomb and a few beaches. Now, it is a different place altogether.

One of the must join tour in Langkawi is the island hopping tour. The highlights of the tour will be the Pulau Beras Basah (island) and the Pulau Bunting Marble Geopark (island). I did write a short post about Pulau Beras Basah a few weeks ago, you can check it out here.

The Pulau Bunting Marble Geopark has been around since the 1990s. The uniqueness of this island lies at the center of the island, a lake. A fresh water lake within an island is something that you don’t see often.

To access to the lake, it will take a while to climb up and down the stairs from the jetty. Surrounded by nature, the island is still well maintained after so many years.

While walking the pathway, do beware of the wild monkeys of the island. As nice as they looks like, please bear in mind wild monkeys carry certain diseases such as herpes.

After a short walk, we reached the lake. Surrounded by nature, the lake was clean and the view was amazing.

There were “couple boats” for rent and we wouldn’t mind spending a few ringgits for a ride. We enjoy our little moments on the lake, enjoying the sights and sounds surrounding the lake.

AS we thought that was it, we spotted a few tourists enjoying the “fish spa”. There were lots of catfish in the lake.

Many people would dip their legs as the catfish will swim around the legs. Well, it was fun! Ticklish but enjoyable!

Langkawi is no longer just a tax free island with cheap booze. There are more to see in Langkawi then before. Do check out their mangrove tour and also the island hopping tour. It is worthwhile to join such tours. It was better than expected!

How to get to Pulau Dayang Bunting Marble Geopark, Langkawi

There are local tours in most hotels in Langkawi offering island hopping tours. Pulau Dayang Bunting Marble Geopark is usually included in the tour.

My previous trip to Langkawi really changed my perception towards the island. It really changed so much over the past decade. From a duty free island to now a more adventurous and fun island. The island hopping tour we paid, brought to this beautiful Beras Basah Island.

My previous trip to Langkawi really changed my perception towards the island. It really changed so much over the past decade. From a duty free island to now a more adventurous and fun island. The island hopping tour we paid, brought to this beautiful Beras Basah Island.

A direct translation of Beras Basah means wet rice. It’s one of the popular destination in Langkawi island. And example of Beras Basah Island or Pulau Beras Basah by Tourism Malaysia.

When we docked at the jetty we were quite surprised by the white sands beach. Check out the color of the sands, the picture is not edited.

Under the shady coconut trees, we sat down and enjoy the beautiful beach. But do watch out for the falling coconuts, I’m just joking.

One of the best thing about the island, its not that busy and packed. So claiming a spot for sun bathing or chill out was easy. Ordering some cold drinks from the shop nearby was the next best thing to do.

On top of sun bathing and probably having a dip near the beach, Beras Basah Island also offers outdoor activities such as banana boat ride and para sailing.

A group of tourists having a fun time riding the banana boat ride.

Well this was us and you can see the para sailing at the background.

For more information on the outdoor activities, please check on the operator vendor on the island.

How to get to Beras Basah Island:

Do check the local tour operators in various locations in Langkawi such as hotels and airport for the island hopping tour that is inclusive of the Beras Basah Island stop-over.

Chartered your own boat at jetty or also consult the local tour operators.

Charges and fees differs depending on the boat type and boat sizes.

Often when we talk about bat cave, the first thing that comes to our mind is Batman. Well, it is true that Batman has a bat cave. However, our country Malaysia also have our version of bat cave.

Located in Langkawi, the bat cave tour is usually packaged under the mangrove tour. Tour prices varies depending on how many person per boat and what type of boat hired. What I can say is we got ourselves quite a sweet deal. This was dated back in October last year.

Platforms were built towards the cave in the middle of the mangrove jungle.

Inside the cave was total darkness. When I flashed my camera, I realized there were lots of bats on the ceiling of the cave. Its kinda creepy though.

Even it looks like droppings, trust me they were bats.

The bat cave tour was included in the mangrove tour like I mentioned as the above. Most hotels have the information about the mangrove tour and other local tours.

Malaysia Truly Asia….

How to go to Bat cave in Langkawi, MALAYSIA:

Most of the mangrove tour in Langkawi includes Bat Cave tour. Prices vary depending on the size of the boat.

Do you know that Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad owns The Loaf? asked by my friend, Joyce.

“Yeah, I know…” I replied.

“His office is up there…” Joyce pointing up on the 2nd floor of The Loaf at Telaga Harbour Park, Langkawi. Obviously she was joking at that time.

The story itself is old, it goes way back to October 2008 when we were having a lovely trip to Langkawi. I guess probably many might not know Tun actually owned a bakery shop by the name of The Loaf. It has 2 outlets, one in Langkawi and the other one is in Pavilion, KL.

So then, I ignored Joyce comments and we chilled at a restaurant nearby. Then, we saw a small crowd passed by and then Joyce was pointing… “That’s Tun Dr. Mahathir…”

Its hard to believe Tun was actually in his bakery.

Tun “spot check” his bakery??

Crowd became bigger as many saw Tun is in his shop. I wasted no time and asked a permission to take a picture with him….

“Tun, how are you? Can we have a picture with you?” – Superwilson

“If you want to take a picture. I have to charge” – Tun Dr. Mahathir

“……. ” – Superwilson

“I charge 10 cent per picture” Tun Dr. Mahathir joked… (phew)

Then, he quickly asked his assistant to take a picture of us.

As our ex-prime minister, he was humble and he remained a fatherly figure to many Malaysians. Its hard to believe he became a “baker” (owner of the bakery) right now. He took some time and enjoyed his tea with many passerby greeted him, including foreign tourists. Tun made our day, its honoured to greet him in person.

A Journey to the Underwater World, Langkawi

(Oct ’08)-Undeniable one of the attractions in Langkawi, the Underwater World Langkawi. I went there before, many years ago when they were newly opened. Now, the place now expanded so much, I barely recognized it. There was an unpleasant thing happened in 2007, where hundreds of fish died of poisoning.

The entrance of Underwater World Langkawi. For Mykad holders (Malaysians), entrance fee was RM 28 for adults while foreigners were RM 38.

Even though there were a tragic incident a year before, there were a lot of fishes were restored. Almost all sections were opened and the place was still a nice place to visit. I loved the penguins section and their feeding session. The penguins were so cute, we were there for quite a while.

There’s also a small 3D cinema hall, another great effort.

I enjoyed the Underwater World Langkawi. Certainly not the best I’ve seen, but its decent.

When I can’t sleep on the plane, admiring the clouds and saw the islands, took my camera and start snapping.
Pictures are photoshop a bit but there are more work can be done. Tone and color is not perfect yet.
How smalls are the islands from top. They are lovely aren’t they?

We went for a quick meal since we had plans for our dinner. We ordered Olive, Onion and Cheese Bread for starter. It was pretty good but I’m not a olive lover. Since we were in Langkawi, we ordered a lovely pink RUFFINO Rose Wine. The wine was good. At last, we ordered a Quattro Pizza. The pizza was excellent. With great services, great wine and great food, it only cost us less than RM 130 plus the wine. We felt its a great deal!

The place itself is huge. In fact, it is famous for its longest swimming pool in Malaysia. I don’t expect much from a 3 stars hotel.
The rooms were still okay. There were stains here and there which I don’t really mind. The corridor was a bit of run down. However, the service was good. They have local channels only, not even Astro was there, I wonder why.

The breakfast was decent. Eggs, Fried Noodle, Cornflakes and sausages.

The swimming pool was good. Even though its huge, it was considered well maintained. I loved the pool.

Location is good also. Its middle of everywhere. There are spas and restaurant within walking distance. No beach though.

I felt that the place is too big for them to maintain. For the price, its worth a stay. However its not for the fussy people that minds about stains and such. The resort has seen its best days, cracks and stains can be visibly seen. Again, for the price should we demand more?
