My father is a Malaccan and we often go there for holiday even though most of our close relatives now stay in Kuala Lumpur. He often brought us back to visit our relatives and also looking for good food.

His story on good food at Jalan Bunga Raya is endless. He told us about the famous fried oyster omelette and also his favourite “fishball lobak”. I have blogged about the fried oyster omelette a few years ago, you can read it at Famous Fried Oyster Omelette @ Jalan Bunga Raya, Melaka (Malacca) but I have not blog about this “fishball lobak”.

This “fishball lobak” is nameless, the owner would cycle with his stall behind (attached to his bicycle) around the town center. However he would usually stop at Jalan Bunga Raya.

The owner is an old man and his children are reluctant to continue his business due to the tediousness and the hard work needed. He has to wake up every morning at 4 am to prepare and to cook his food. Then, he will cycle to places and stop there to operate his business. He has been doing this for decades.

He often joked with my father and asked us whether are we interested to learn how to make his delicious “fishball lobak”. He feared his good food will not pass on.

Why is it called “fishball lobak”? For those who tasted Melaka’s pale yellow skinned fish ball, the texture and the taste is different with the fishballs from Kuala Lumpur. Melaka’s fish balls fillings are softer and least “bouncy”. According to my father, they would call it fishball or lobak or fishball lobak.

A plate of fishball lobak cost only a few ringgit, it depends how much you want. The fishball lobak consist of fried fishball, crispy “cracker”, fried taufu (beancurd) and fried yam with cucumber and sweet starchy paste and also chili sauce. This is a typical fishball lobak, a Malaccan food which is easily available at most stalls in Melaka. Thus, don’t just eat satay celup or the chicken rice balls, you can also try the fishball lobak.

Sadly, I never got the chance to hop on the ferris wheel while it was in Titiwangsa but I did hop on in Malacca instead, last year. It was majestic and huge, beautifully erected near the seaside in Malacca. The Eye on Malaysia comprises 42 air conditioned gondolas including 1 VIP gondola.

Of course, it didn’t have the beautiful scenery of Kuala Lumpur, the Eye on Malaysia itself is a beauty. For locals, the ride was only RM 10. My friends and I went for a ride and it was air conditioned and fun.

The Eye On Malaysia is currently closed down until further notice.

A gift for the Queen remains in the heart of Malacca for centuries. Malacca once ruled by the British from 1826 to 1946, for more than 100 years. For the remembrance of the late Queen Victoria Regina, the Malaccans erected the fountain in 1901 coinciding with the Diamond Jubilee. A Diamond Jubilee is a celebration to mark a 60th anniversary of the reign of the King or Queen.

The Victoria Fountain: Dedicated to the late Queen of the Great British Empire in 1901
Located just in front of the Christ Church and also the Stadthuys, the Victoria Fountain has been part of the icon of Malacca. The scene is almost in every post card, catalogue or books that symbolized Malacca. Listed in the Unesco Heritage site in 2008, Malacca is known as the historical city of Malaysia. The uniqueness of Malacca is it has been ruled by different colonial powers such as the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Today, the fountain still stands tall and looks new though it has been around for more than a century.

Victoria Regina 1837-1901, Erected by the people of Malacca in memory of a Great Queen -1904
The Victoria Fountain of Malacca is not just a tribute to the late Queen, but also an important artifact of the British colonial era in the past. Its existence is important for the history of Malacca and Malaysia.

Pineapple Tarts near Jonker Street – Pooh Keon Enterprise, Malacca, MALAYSIA

Melaka is famous for its UNESCO heritage site. For its food, it will be the chicken rice ball, the “satay celup” and the pineapple tarts. Pineapple tarts and pineapple rolls are everywhere nowadays in Jonker Street, Melaka. However, finding a good authentic pineapple tart shop could be tough.

My parents have been patronizing a shop near Jonker Street for years. It’s called Pooh Keon Enterprise.

The most notable reason buying from this shop is because the pineapple tarts here are freshly made. There is also a big oven baking the pineapple tarts daily. A box of the pineapple tarts cost around RM 10 (*not sure the exact figure). Pineapple tarts here are made using margarine.

I would recommend the pineapple rolls. A box of pineapple rolls is around RM 12. The picture shows the fresh pineapple rolls on the tray getting ready to put into the oven for baking. Pineapple rolls here are made using butter.

On top of the pineapple tarts and rolls, they also sell other local food products such as husband cake, new year cake and so on.

I bought a few boxes of pineapple rolls for my family and also my in-law family. The pineapple rolls skin is fragrant with the usage of butter. The pineapple fillings are tasty and not too sweet.

However, I do find inconsistency in the boxes of pineapple rolls. Some are more fragrant and taste better while the rest taste rather plain. My mother also felt the same on the recent pineapple rolls boxes we bought.

If they can maintain their consistency, the pineapple rolls here are recommended.

Pooh Keon Enterprise Address:
No. 81, Jalan Tokong, 75200 Melaka.

Located in Melaka, many might not heard about this temple, some might not know the existence of it. Even I’ve been there for so many times didn’t know the rich history of this temple.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple or some might referred it to Quan Yin Temple is actually one of the oldest Chinese Temple in Malaysia.

Cheng Hoon Teng was founded in the 1600s by the Chinese Kapitan Tay Kie Ki alias Tay Hong Yong. The temple it self is around 400 years old! Even today it looked as if it is brand new. The reason being is the restoration. In fact, they did it so well until it was underscored by an UNESCO award for outstanding architectural restoration.

I was there at the temple on CNY’s eve. I had been missing for a few years so I intended to go back and have a look. It was very early in the morning around 7 am. The sky was still dark and it was already crowded by worshipers.

The architecture and the design of the temple lasted for 400 years and yet it looked as if its new.

Its a small stall that’s only operates at night at Medan Makanan Bunga Raya at Jalan Bunga Raya. The stall normally operates from 8pm until midnight and expect a long queue to order.

My father’s hometown is Melaka. He told me that, the stall was already popular when he was a kid. The stall has been operating at least 40-50 years. My grandma told me they used to cook with duck eggs which tasted much better. Now, they only use normal chicken eggs. After generations passed, the small little stall is there.

This picture was taken last year during my last trip to Melaka. I had been searching this few pictures for weeks and glad I found it.

That’s the stall with the huge pan. They can cook up at least 5-6 plates at once!

Look at the amount of the eggs!

Sadly, I didn’t manage to have the fried oyster that day. I needed to wait for an hour if I wanted to have the fried oyster. I couldn’t wait as it was already 11pm.

The fried oyster omelette is popular because its cooked to perfection. Fried oyster omelette there were usually starchy (not crispy) and the oysters were small. Its different than the fried oyster omelette from KL (Kuala Lumpur).

My father would always take away a few plates back to KL if he would be in Melaka. A plate used to cost around RM 8 each plate but I wouldn’t know how much it costs now.

Recommended!
