Earlier this month, we ventured to Bandar Menjalara for a shabu-shabu buffet. We dine at Shabuland with a group of blogger friends. Many compare shabu-shabu with steamboat but due to hygiene, we prefer shabu-shabu. Shabu-shabu is a Japanese style hot pot where everyone has their own hot pot.

Shabuland offers shabu-shabu buffet or eat all you can style food for a very reasonable price. They offered a variety of food such as seafood (clams, crabs, scallops, fish noodles, etc), meat (thin slices of beef, pork, lamb), vegetables, noodles and fried food.

Hence, the buffet also inclusive deserts such as variety of King’s ice cream and the popular Yoyo Ice.

The food was served in small plates on a moving kaiten (conveyor belt) which often used in sushi restaurants.

Small portion of food serving in small plates mean we can have more variety of food without wasting any food.

There are three different types of soups available, ABC soup, Herbal Chicken soup or Tom Yam soup. I preferred the ABC soup.

You prefer to spice up your food, there is a sauce section near the ice cream area that offers a variety of sauces.

We enjoy having plates of thin slices of pork and beef. Just dipped into the soup for a few seconds and it is ready to eat. Try eating it by itself to enjoy the freshness of the meat.

We share the food so we can try more variety of food. The small portions really help. We had at least 20-30 plates of the meat, we loved them!

It was a night of stories and laughter and it ended with scoops of Yoyo Ice cream. We enjoyed the buffet dinner and now they are running promotions for an adult for only RM 29.90 nett (inclusive of everything, no hidden cost). See below for the promotion details.

In one of our recent food reviews, we were invited to review alcoholic ice creams and desserts at Gecko Bar in PJ Trade Centre. Well, how could we refuse? It is alcoholic ice creams and desserts! We bet everyone is sick and tired of “Rum and Raisin” or “Champagne” flavour ice cream in the market so it is time for new funky flavours courtesy of Gecko Bar.

We started off with Chicken Merguez Sausages. Fresh from their kitchen, the sausages were delicious and that was only the starter.

The alcoholic food journey started off with the alcoholic ice creams. The tricky part about alcoholic ice cream as we were told is they melt too fast. Getting the right balance of alcohol and ice cream took Gecko Bar a few months of testing before they invited us for the review.

Single Malt 12 Years Old Macallan Ice Cream, we felt the flavour of the single malt was not strong enough and it was definitely missing the fragrance of the 12 year old. However, they noted our comments and going to improve the flavour. Guess, will have to go there again for round two!

The Johnnie Walker keeps on walkin’ Ice Cream kept us eating. If you are a Johnnie Walker lover, you will crave this and kept on ordering.

The Guinness Ice Cream was our favourite. The hint of slight bitterness and the dark texture, the ice cream was a lighter version of the Guinness beer.

The alcoholic dessert started with Chocolate Pie top with Vanilla ice cream and Bailey sauce. This is Bailey’s haven.

Lastly, it was the Peanut Butter Snow Pie who reminded me to come back for more.

We hope this not just another food review everyone was expecting. We enjoyed the smooth creamy alcoholic ice creams and desserts and looking forward to the next visit. The sausages itself are worth the visit.

Want to have a special Christmas dining experience this year? Getting tired of the same old thing? Well, try this, Mexican Christmas Dinning Experience in Frontera Sol of Mexico.

This was not my first time there. I was there two years ago and my review can be read here.

The thing about Frontera is that they serve only traditional and authentic Mexican food. Thus, some of the food is not adapted to our local taste bud. Hence, some might argue about the taste of the food but that is how it is in Mexico. Frontera is one of the few Mexican flavour restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the happening place of Jaya One, hosts of many interesting and delicious restaurants and bars.

We were invited to try out their new Christmas menu a few weeks ago. Right in our mind was nachos, burrito and chimichanga. However, it was a different new thing. It is a brand new Mexican Christmas Dinner.

We started off with 2 special drinks, alcoholic 1919 Shangria and non-alcoholic Watermelon Agua Fresca.

For entrée we have Traditional Tamales (Choices of chicken / Beef). From the look at it, it thought was Chinese Dumplings. Actually it tasted similar like Chinese Dumpling as well but in a different way.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Sage Pesto

Rachel thought this was pumpkin soup. The texture was thicker but the colour is similar to a pumpkin soup colour. The roasted butternut has this little significant taste that is hard to explain in words, once you try it you will know.

Mesquite Smoked Turkey with Broccoli Florets Topped with Chili Con Queso

This is not mosquito turkey but Mesquite Smoked Turkey with Broccoli Florets Topped, Cranberry Chipotle Relish, Jalapeno Corn Bread Dressing and Chili Con Queso. The sliced turkey meat was cooked tenderly with flavour and I enjoyed the Jalapeno Corn Bread Dressing.

Veracruz-style Fillet of Red Snapper with Mexican rice & Sonora vegetables. This is another alternative for those who prefer fish than turkey.

The Christmas set also comes with two very special desserts, Peach Tres Leches Cake and Key Lime Pie.

Peach Tres Leches Cake was sweet and the taste was dominated with milk flavour.

Lastly, we had the Key Lime Pie which had a soft texture and strongly infused with lime flavour.

Like I said, if you are looking for a different Christmas dinner, this might be an option for you. Check out the details below and book early to avoid disappointments.

Frontera Christmas Eve & Day Set Dinner

On Sunday, I went to a road trip to Tanjung Karang for the fisherman’s catch. Tanjung Karang is located 10 km away from the famous Kuala Selangor.

We went to this small little fisherman market call Chop Hai Guan in Tanjung Karang. I was told they have the freshest seafood around.

We took around two hours of driving from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Karang. We reached there around 10.30 am. Our friends were still on their way, overslept on Sunday morning.

It is a typical private jetty made from wood and concrete. This place has been around for years. My sister in law’s family has been buying seafood here for more than 15 years.

A worker was breaking the ice before putting it into the icebreaker machine.

Since we were early, it was still low tide and the fishing boats were not back yet from the sea so we had to wait. We have no idea what time they will be coming but they estimated they will reached after noon.

What is fisherman’s catch? Fisherman’s catch means the whole shebang of whatever the fishing boat manage to catch in the sea. No one knows what we will be getting until the fishing boat arrives. However, those will be the freshest seafood you can buy.

Since we had nothing to do, so I took a few pictures around the market.

Everyone was very excited when the first fishing boat arrived.

The first fishing boat had a big load of prawns/ shrimps. They sorted out the prawns and the small fishes on the boat before they transfer into the market. I was told that the smaller fishes will be sold to factories to process to fishballs or processed to feeds for fish farms.

The arrived second fishing boat was smaller but they caught more fish than the first. They had a big lot of larger shrimps/prawns too.

The third boat had the most catch. They caught varieties of fishes and five big eels as well.

It was our first time at a fresh fish market like this, city kids.

The workers were sorting out the fishes in front of the crowd.

We were waiting for them to sort out their catch.

Every catch will be weighed and then sold to the customers. We took the whole lot of the prawns.

My dad was taking his own sweet time to pick the fish.

Boon was caught napping in the market.

It was like a shopping spree. We brought our own ice-boxes. If you didn’t bring any, you can buy from them for RM 7 for white poly container. We bought 3 Coleman container size of seafood.

By the time we finished, it was around 3 pm. Most of the catch was sold out, only left the small fishes in the market.

We spent almost half a day in the market. In total, we spent more than RM 1000. I believe the supplies we bought can last us until year end.

After leaving the market, we drove to Kuala Selangor for a very late lunch. Tanjung Karang is no longer a story I’ve heard from my friends. It was an eye opener experience to city dwellers like us. We will not hesitate to visit the market again in the near future. Every experience is unique.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to review the Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant in Hulu Langat. I have visited the restaurant a few times before the review.

The restaurant is near the Hulu Langat Lookout point. After passing the Lookout Point on the right hand side, keep on driving towards to Hulu Langat until you spot the Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant signage. You will need to drive down the slope and within a few hundred metres, you will reach the Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant.

Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant is built on top of a small man made fish pond.

On top of their fresh seafood, they also offer fresh vegetables planted in their own organic vegetable farm. There I met the other Selangorlicious Foodsters and we geared up for a heavy lunch.

We started off with Fried Chicken with Kaffir Lime Leaf – RM15 / US$5 (Small), RM 20 / US$ 7 (Large).

Then, it was their famous Seafood Tom Yam Soup for RM18 / US$ 6, they also offers the clear soup version.

Kerabu Chicken Feet – RM12 / US$ 4 (Small); RM18 / US$ 6 (Large) is a must for chicken feet or kerabu lovers.

Sotong Masak Pedas with Coconut Milk – RM12 / US$ 4 (Small); RM22 / US$ 7 (Large) tastes similar to the usual calamari rings but spicier and it is dipped with rich coconut milk.

Grilled Lamb – RM18 / US$ 6 (Small); RM24 / US$ 8 (Large)is well marinated and seasoned.

Udang Goreng Cili Bawang Putih – RM15 / US$ 5 (Small); RM28 / US$ 9 (Large) also looks and taste similar to tempura prawns but their version is enriched with spicy flavours from chili and garlic.

Mango Kerabu – RM10 / US$ 3 (Small); RM15 / US$ 5 (Large) or Thai version of papaya salad is one of the most popular Thai dishes that cannot be missed.

Kangkung with Tao Chew – RM8 / US$ 3 (Small); RM12 / US$ 4 (Large) is for those who fancy their fresh organic kangkung.

Like the Udang Goreng Cili Bawang Putih, Fried Spinach – RM8 / US$ 3 (Small); RM12 / US$ 4 (Large) has a strong influence from the fried tempura vegetable.

Lemon Steamed Fish RM3 (US$1) / 100 gram is another favourites there. It has similar taste to Tom Yam soup but richer in lemon taste. Having a steamed fish is the best way to taste the freshness of the fish.

Ketam Masak Serbuk Kari – RM5.50 (US$2) / 100 gram or Curry Powder Crab is a must have for crab lovers on top of their popular BBQ Crabs. The strongly curry powder flavoured crabs are addictive.

Lastly, we had a platter of popular Thai desserts that left us a deep impression on this restaurant. Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant also offers alcohol coconut flower drinks. All the vegetables served there are planted by their own organic vegetables farm. If you are looking for good and fresh Thai food, you might want to visit Vegetable Fish Farm Thai Restaurant.

Please booked for your table to avoid disappointments, the restaurant is usually packed during dinner and weekends. Thanks Selangorlicious for the invite!

Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐) at Fei Fei Crab

For the fans of Jin Yong, they must know the story of Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain(雪山飛狐). The story was serialized in 1959. However, we are not talking about that fiction story but a type of dish. The nickname Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐) is actually given to Salt Wrap Fish which is very popular in Bukit Tinggi near Genting Highlands. I had my first encounter with Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐) three years ago in Cheras at Restoran 2008, my intention was to try their infamous edible snow beer.

This time around we had it at a popular restoran near Kepong by the name of Fei Fei Crab. Fei Fei Crab means fatty crab in English and it has been patronized by the Ho Chiak team before. We went there for lunch a few weeks ago courtesy of Selangorlicious. I was there with bloggers like Nigel Low and Ken from Foodpoi.com.

Why is Salt Wrap Fish nicknamed as Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐)? The salt wrap fish is covered by the white salt resemblance of the snow and the fish meat is usually juicy due to the freshness of the fish. The fish skin is not edible and it will be peeled off. There are a few methods of making the Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain. We will blog about the recipe next week (after we succeeded in creating it a few weeks ago).

Fei Fei Crab’s version of Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐) or Salt Wrap Fish (RM 30 / US$10) has a softer salt layer coated on the skin of the fish. Chef Tan told us that he used a different technique to achieve that.

The amazing thing about this fish is the freshness and tenderness of it. You tell from the look of the texture of the meat. This is highly recommended.

Sizzling Plate Seafood (RM 20 / US$ 7) was next. The sizzling hot plate comes with a mixture of prawns, long beans, brinjals, green mussels and bamboo clams.

Belacan Sweet Potato Leafs with Egg Plant (RM 12 / US$ 4) topped with fried anchovies (fried ikan bilis) gives the extra crunchiness to this vegetable dish.

Fei Fei Crab’s Butter and Dried Chillies Japanese Snail (RM30 / US$10) were twin combinations of different style of cooking using the Japanese Snails.

The Pattaya Pork Knuckles (RM42 / US$14) was lacking the extra crunchiness on outer layer but it did not lack of taste and also the tenderness of the meat.

Great Wall Pork Rib (RM28 / US$ 9.30) was another sinful dish that is cooked to perfection. The appearance resemblance of the Great Wall and it was tastefully done. The taste was a marriage of “tong por” and Char siew with the tenderness of the meat.

The Yam Ring with Chicken and Pork Rib (RM 30 / US$10) was inspired by the movie 2012. Chef Tan wanted to recreate this dish as the volcano eruption dish as the yam ring represents the mountain while the chicken represents the lava while the pork ribs represents the surrounding landscape. Just a thought, probably some chili or tomato sauce could add some colours to this creative dish.

The Spicy Butter Crab (RM35 / US$12) was the first of the two crab dishes we tasted that afternoon. The spicy butter gravy was slightly too spicy to our preferences but the “L size” crabs were well cooked and it did not disappoint us at all!

The Marmite Crab (RM 35 / US$12) or Vegemite Crab was the best dish to end the feast-like lunch. The crab is cooked with the sweet sauce with hints of marmite and this style of cooking is one of the favourites in many seafood restaurants in Klang Valley.

Ten dishes for lunch and what could we ask for more? The passion and the creativity of Chef Tan must be taken account for all the food we had and he created in Fei Fei Crab. We were told that he created Coffee Crab as one of his new dishes. We hope to try that one day.

We enjoyed our lunch at Fei Fei Crab. The Marmite Crab and also Salt Wrap Fish left a very good impression for us and we might go there again for that both dishes as well as the new coffee crab. We must thank again Selangorlicious for the generous invite.

Please check our recipe on the Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (雪山飛狐)next week!

This week PlacesAndFoods.com will be doing the Football Fever in Malaysia theme and starting from next week, we will be back to normal. We will be posting up our travel itinerary for Bali next week so please bear with us if you are not a football fan.

Yesterday I got a chance of lifetime to meet up with Chelsea FC players at One World Hotel. To make it sweeter, I was actually staying with the players at One World Hotel courtesy of Malaysia Airlines.

Since morning, Chelsea FC fans and supporters can be seen loitering at the lobby area. Some of them wanted the players’ signatures while some of them just wanted a glimpse of them.

As the “Meet the player session” was 4.30pm, by noon there were already a huge crowd starting to queue up. Since it was an exclusive event, passes were needed.

I got a bit of luck as I was the first few who went in. There I bumped to friends like Steph and Helen. The event room was security tight and there was a long queue and everyone got the chance to meet the players and let them to sign for only one item. I took my Chelsea jersey (which I bought earlier on) for them to sign.

It was really an up close and personal event. I managed to take picture with Chelsea FC stars like Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole. The whole team was inclusive of first team coaches.

Fernando Torres and me at the event.

Ashley Cole and me at the event.

You can check out the photo album at my Facebook page, please “like it” thanks.

Steph Ng and me after the “Meet the players” session.
After the “Meet the players session”, I rushed to the Bukit Jalil Stadium to watch the players training session.

My room at One World Hotel, thank you Malaysia Airlines!
Then, I went back to the hotel and called it a day. It was really tiring day as I was running here and there. However, to meet and stay with Chelsea players were totally amazing experience. I enjoyed my lovely stay at One World Hotel.
