Malaysia Airlines to increase flights to Melbourne Airport

For travellers visiting Melbourne Australia, there is a good news! Melbourne Airport has welcomed Malaysia Airlines’ announcement for a third daily service between Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur, commencing in November 2013.

Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said the additional daily service highlights the growing demand for travel between Melbourne and Malaysia.

“This additional service will provide more opportunities to strengthen our tourism, business and education connections with Malaysia and destinations served by the Malaysia Airlines’ network,” Mr Woodruff said.

“Attracting more international services to Melbourne also provides Victorians with more choice in services and destinations, and more opportunities for our exporters to send their goods to valuable overseas markets,” Mr Woodruff said.

Melbourne is Australia’s largest market for travel to/from Malaysia, accounting for 32 per cent of total travel between Australia and Malaysia with more than 350,000 passengers annually.

Malaysia Airlines Regional Senior Vice President of Australia, New Zealand and South West Pacific, Mr Lee Poh Kait said, “With Melbourne now flying three times daily, this will increase seating capacity from 7,896 seats per week to 11844 per week. This is a 50 per cent increase in the overall availability of seats.  Melbourne is one of Malaysia Airlines’ key markets, now flying 21 times weekly and is in line with the airlines’ continued efforts to strengthen its position as a top airline within this region.”

Mr Woodruff said the additional daily service from Malaysia Airlines followed an increase in the capacity available under the bilateral air services agreement between Australia and Malaysia.

“Providing more capacity in these agreements enables airlines to plan for, and deliver more flights to meet the growing demand for air travel and freight capacity.  It also supports Victoria’s economy through increased travel for tourism, business and education,” Mr Woodruff said.
