The 2004 tsunami tragedy killed thousands in Thailand and affected millions across the Asia and the world. I have many friends who survived the tragedy and I was invited to visit a few of the affected areas in Phuket at that time. I visited Patong Beach one month after the incident and Phi Phi Island three months after incident. It is heartbreaking to see how many people died and how many people suffered during and after the tsunami.
Recently, I drove around Southern Thailand for two weeks and I stumbled upon the Baan Nam Ken Tsunami Memorial Park at Phang Nga.
The memorial park is located at the west of Takua Pa and it is around 30 kilometres north of Khao Lak, Phang Nga. I spotted the memorial park as I was travelling down from Ranong and on my way to the beautiful Koh Kho Khao island.
The memorial park is built in 2006 to remembrance the victims and I saw quite a number of tourists in the park. The memorial park bears the names and faces of 3,500 Thais and foreigners who lost their lives in the area.
If you look closer, you can find many names on the wall remembering for those who lost their lives in this part of Thailand. Khao Lak is one of the worst hit areas in Thailand during the tsunami.
There is also a large statue of Buddha that sits facing the memorial with the backdrop of the sea. The GPS location of this memorial is at 8.85921, 98.26600. The memorial is near the jetty that offers ferry to Ko Kho Khao.
