Robata Monkey Jaya One Set Lunch Bento

There is a Japanese restaurant making its name in PJ (Petaling Jaya) since its opening a few months ago. The name is Robata Monkey and it is by the same geniuses behind another popular restaurant Kissaten.

Robata Monkey is a robatayaki style izakaya. They serve a careful selection of local & imported Japanese fresh seafood, juicy meats & seasonal vegetables grilled over an OPEN SANDPIT HEARTH.

This cooking method is keeping with the traditional robatayaki style, which originated in rustic farmhouses throughout Sendai. Story goes that fishermen put red-hot charcoal in a solid wooden box at the start of the day, took it with them, and at the end of the day the charcoal would still be hot enough to cook the fish as soon as they dock.

The fun starts at night as Robata Monkey is in the performance watching the chef grilling your food over a selection of wine, German beers, Japanese sake, shochu, cocktails & beers.  Thus, there is still fun for lunch as they recently launched their set lunch bento.

This is my first time visiting the restaurant as for the past few months I have been traveling out of the country. The restaurant is located in Jaya One next to Kissaten restaurant. It is a cozy air conditioned restaurant with open kitchen concept. Hence, you can watch the chefs in action while you are waiting for your food. Of course, their kitchen is very clean and hygiene.

The lunch bento is cook per order. They do not pre-cook their food so you get warm and fresh lunch bento in Robata Monkey. Most of their lunch bento comes with tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits. The small side dish in the middle of bento is bonito flakes with sesame seed and it will change from time to time depending on the ingredients available.

Currently Robata Monkey is offering nine types of set lunch bento. They are unagi bento, teriyaki chicken bento, saba fish bento, tori katsu bento, karaage bento, salmon sashimi bento, moriawase sashimi bento, chasoba set and udon set.

Moriawase Sashimi Bento.

For Moriawase Sashimi Bento, enjoy a selected of fresh sashimi of raw fish includes salmon, tuna, cuttlefish and yellow tail. Together with bento are the tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

Salmon Sashimi Bento

If you are craving for salmon sashimi for lunch, you should try their Salmon Sashimi Bento. It comes with perfectly sliced salmon sashimi with bento side dishes, tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

Tori Katsu Bento

Tori Katsu Bento is set lunch with fried breaded chicken. Chicken is deep fried to crispiness on the outer layer while the meat is still tender. It comes with tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

Saba Fish Bento

The set menu bento comes with two slices of grilled saba fish with tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

The saba fish is reasonably large in size and you will definitely enjoy it,

Chasoba set

If you are a lover of soba noodle, you should try their Chasoba set. Chasoba set is green tea cold soba with deep fried tempura prawn and vegetables, chawan mushi, quail egg and the soba sauce.

Mix the quail egg with the soba sauce and dipped the cold green tea soba noodle into it before you eat them.

The green tea soba noodle is surprisingly enjoyable and refreshing even though I am not a big soba noodle fan.

Udon Set

The udon set comes with a bowl of hot udon with deep fried tempura prawn and vegetables, chawan mushi and fruits. I enjoyed their udon noodle as well as those mini mushrooms and it taste well too.

Unagi Bento

If you know about the high price of unagi (grilled eel with sweet sauce), you will understand why unagi is so expensive nowadays. At Robata Monkey, you get one large size of unagi with tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits. It is hard to go wrong with unagi.

I love unagi and I enjoyed the large portion and the juicy and soft texture of the fish. This is heavenly!

Teriyaki Chicken Bento

What do you get with freshly cooked chicken with sweet teriyaki sauce, teriyaki chicken. Watch the video and see how they cook the teriyaki chicken from scratch and it taste as good as it looks. I love the tenderness of the chicken as well as the side dishes of tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

Karaage Bento

If you ask me honestly, which is the best bento, the winner goes to Karaage Bento. Karaage is deep fried chicken is the best of the lot. I have been to many Japanese restaurants and at times they spoilt this dish by pre-fried the chicken so I always get the cold karaage. At Robata Monkey, the karaage is not just freshly deep fried but the taste is heavenly and the meat is juicy and tender. I don’t mind ordering the karaage as ala carte if you ask me. Karaage is deep fried chicken and different than the deep fried breaded chicken. The Karaage Bento like the rest comes with tempura prawn and vegetables, vegetables, chawan mushi, miso soup, rice and fruits.

After tasting nine set lunch bento, I can hardly move. My top picks of their set lunch bento are Karaage Bento, Unagi Bento and Moriawase Sashimi Bento.
