It is not often you visit places like Teluk Kumbar in Penang. This Southern part of Penang is located near Bayan Lepas and it is sort of inconvenient to travel there. However with the new Penang 2nd bridge, visiting Teluk Kumbar is easier by saving more than half an hour if you are traveling from the mainland.
What is special with Teluk Kumbar? How about seafood and one of the best places to visit sunset in Penang.
We went to Teluk Kumbar sometime ago and you will be greeted by many seafood restaurants. As recommended by our local friend, we had dinner at Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant.
The restaurant is located on the beach side and it is huge, covered and non-air conditioned. When we were there, we got the cold breeze from the winds from the sea. Probably you get hints of sea salt too in the food due to the winds (I am just joking).
Fried Brinjal
One of the signature dishes in Hai Boey is the fried brinjal. Sliced brinjal is deep fried to perfection with batter. How is the taste? It is hard to go wrong with fried food.
La La with Superior Soup
La La with Superior Soup is enjoyable and the size of the la la is quite large in size. The superior soup is good in taste, no complaints. La la is a type of clam that is very popular in South East Asia. The common ones are small in size probably around 2 to 4 cm in length.
Abalone and Mushroom with Seafood Tofu
Abalone and Mushroom with Seafood Tofu is another signature dish. We added the abalones and of course that reflects on the bill as well. I definitely love the seafood tofu and can’t complain on the mini abalones.
Grilled Crabs
There are two ways to taste the goodness of fresh crabs, it is either you steam it or you grill it. The grilled crab is probably the easiest way to cook the crab and also the best way to taste the juiciness of it. However if the crabs are not fresh, grilling it is not the best option. As expected, we enjoyed the natural goodness of crabs for this dish.
Salted Egg Crabs
Lastly, we had salted egg crabs. Stir fried crab with salted egg (duck egg) with is quite a common food in Malaysia. Most Asians love salted duck egg and the popularity of stir fried crab with salted egg started around ten years ago. However, Hai Boey’s version is stingy with salted egg but not the taste.
The food at Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant is good and the pricing is slightly cheaper than KL (Kuala Lumpur) and slightly higher than average Penang seafood restaurants. If you are sitting on the table with the beach side breeze and beautiful sunset, what can you expect more?
