Huawei P20 Pro Preview
A few days ago, I was invited to the Huawei P20 Series Official Launch in Sunway Convention Centre. This is my first time attending a Huawei event. Like many others out there, I am sure that you are curious on the quality of Huawei P20 Series camera. This is the best camera on a smartphone in the market right now. No matter how the iPhone fanboys claim how good is the iPhoneX camera, this is way better than that. Huawei P20 Pro has the highest DXO Mark score of 114 for photography!
When the specs are too good to be true, you want to check out the phone. Played with it and test it and that’s why there will be experiential roadshows soon in selected venues in Malaysia (starts from Sunway Pyramid).
The Huawei P20 Pro comes with three Leica cameras. One camera offers 40MP RGB, one is on 20MP monochrome and the last one is 8MP telephoto. The three Leica cameras are not for gimmick but it has real functions. Not forgetting the photography with AI technology.
Why photography is important for a smartphone? Most pictures on my blog are captured with my smartphone. I travel around with my phone and I have thousands of images in a single trip. I love photography and I believe in traveling light. However, there are limitations on photography with smartphone. There are three huge problems I always encountered with smartphone photography and they are image stability, low light photography and optical zoom.
Huawei claimed that Huawei P20 Pro solved these three main issues. I had Huawei P20 Pro like for 10 – 20 minutes so I can’t give a full review yet so that’s why the title says a preview.
I did three short videos and you can watch it below.
There is one camera function that is very useful on Iphones and that is the Portrait Mode. Whenever I travelled with Mynn (from SheWalksTheWorld.com), she will ask me to help her to her photographs with Portrait Mode. I thought it is one of the key highlights for Iphone camera until Huawei P20 Pro’s Portrait Mode. If you check out the video, I took the picture of @Smashpop on Portrait mode, the speed and the final picture is amazing. The ‘bokeh’ effect and this doesn’t need a distance like Iphones. If you are a huge fan of Portrait Mode, you must go and check it out Huawei P20 Pro.
I didn’t manage to test the low light capability so I am going to skip that one.
Next, is image stability. Huawei P20 Pro comes with photography with AI assist so I thought it is another marketing gimmick. Watch the video above and check out how the AI configures and recognise the objects. I also tried shaking the phone and taking photo and it came out sharp (not in the video). This is something even a DSLR can’t do on Auto mode.
The zoom function of the smartphone. This is one of the main weakness of smart photography until Huawei P20 Pro. Check out the video how I switch to 3x optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom. What I can say is it is really impressive.
This is my preview version of Huawei P20 Pro. Will hope to get a unit soon so I can take some nice food and travel photos and videos and also a longer review of the phone. I have not fully check out their interfaces, the speed of the phone and also the video. This is just a short preview of what I have experienced with Huawei P20 Pro and do check out the experiential roadshow to check out the Huawei P20 Series phones.
Huawei P20 is priced at RM 2,599 and Huawei P20 Pro is priced at RM 3,299 from 6th April 2018. The Twilight version is not available in Malaysia yet until further notice, check out the official website at https://consumer.huawei.com/en/phones/p20-pro/
