Tha Maharaj Bangkok Chao Phraya River
When you think Bangkok is just about new shopping malls like Central Embassy or Emquartier, you are so wrong. There is another new attraction recently opened in Bangkok and it is called “Tha Maharaj”.
When I did research on this place, this is a rather unique project. Tha Maharaj is located on Maharaj Road in Rattanakosin Island (somewhere in Bangkok) and it is built in the early Rattansakosin period. It is located on the bank of Chao Phraya river and it is surrounded by the culture heritage and tourist attractions such as The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and many more.
Tha Maharaj is not as big as Asiatique and it is unique as it is converted from traditional shop houses and such. So far, only the locals are visiting this area as this is still very new.
At Tha Maharaj, they offer open-air restaurants, retail shops, riverside promenade and community garden. There are all together 7 buildings including a parking building that can accommodate 200 vehicles.
One of the highlights of this place is the Savoey Restaurant, a popular Thai restaurant and it is often packed with locals. I reviewed the restaurant and the food is really good and the restaurant has a long history as one of the top local restaurants in the city.
Since it opened recently, some of the shops are still renovating but like I said, the restaurant Savoey is already a key attraction.
Tha Maharaj can be reached by road, as well as by the river via Chao Phraya Express Boat, Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, Ferry Crossing Boat, Long-Tail Boats and Private Boats.
