Prasat Sikhoraphum Khmer Temple in Surin Thailand

Time to share the new places we visited in Thailand. For the past few days, we were in Surin, Sisaket and Buriram province in Thailand. These are the northeast provinces in Thailand and not many people visited this areas. One of their most popular attractions is Prasat Sikhoraphum Khmer Temple in Surin Thailand.

Prasat Sikhoraphum

Prasat Sikhoraphum is an ancient temple complex located in northeastern Thailand, specifically in Surin Province. It is known for its unique architectural style, combining elements of both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The temple dates back to the 12th century and was built during the reign of the Khmer Empire, which had a significant influence on the region at that time.

If you visited the Khmer temples in Siem Reap, you will find many similarities in terms of architecture and design. The name “Prasat Sikhoraphum” translates to “Sikhoraphum Palace” in English. The complex is composed of several structures, with the central focus being a main sanctuary or prang, which stands on a raised platform. The prang is a tall tower-like structure with intricate carvings and elaborate decorations, featuring sculptures of deities, mythical creatures, and scenes from Hindu mythology.

What makes Prasat Sikhoraphum unique is its blending of architectural styles. The temple displays a mix of Khmer, Lopburi, and Ayutthaya influences, reflecting the cultural and artistic exchange between the Khmer Empire and the neighboring regions. The Khmer Empire, centered in present-day Cambodia, exerted significant influence over parts of modern-day Thailand, including the Surin Province.
