Prasat Sikhoraphum Khmer Temple in Surin Thailand
Time to share the new places we visited in Thailand. For the past few days, we were in Surin, Sisaket and Buriram province in Thailand. These are the northeast provinces in Thailand and not many people visited this areas. One of their most popular attractions is Prasat Sikhoraphum Khmer Temple in Surin Thailand.
Prasat Sikhoraphum is an ancient temple complex located in northeastern Thailand, specifically in Surin Province. It is known for its unique architectural style, combining elements of both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The temple dates back to the 12th century and was built during the reign of the Khmer Empire, which had a significant influence on the region at that time.
If you visited the Khmer temples in Siem Reap, you will find many similarities in terms of architecture and design. The name “Prasat Sikhoraphum” translates to “Sikhoraphum Palace” in English. The complex is composed of several structures, with the central focus being a main sanctuary or prang, which stands on a raised platform. The prang is a tall tower-like structure with intricate carvings and elaborate decorations, featuring sculptures of deities, mythical creatures, and scenes from Hindu mythology.
What makes Prasat Sikhoraphum unique is its blending of architectural styles. The temple displays a mix of Khmer, Lopburi, and Ayutthaya influences, reflecting the cultural and artistic exchange between the Khmer Empire and the neighboring regions. The Khmer Empire, centered in present-day Cambodia, exerted significant influence over parts of modern-day Thailand, including the Surin Province.
The temple complex is surrounded by a moat, and the outer walls are adorned with decorative motifs, including mythical creatures and intricate patterns. The main entrance to the temple faces east, and visitors can explore the complex by walking along a laterite causeway.
Although Prasat Sikhoraphum suffered some damage over the centuries, restoration efforts have been made to preserve its architectural and historical significance. The Fine Arts Department of Thailand has undertaken restoration projects to maintain the temple complex and ensure its cultural heritage is protected.
Today, Prasat Sikhoraphum is a popular tourist destination and a significant historical site in Thailand. Visitors can appreciate the unique blend of architectural styles, admire the intricate carvings, and learn about the ancient Khmer civilization that once thrived in the region.
Surin is not a very popular tourist destination for foreign tourists and hence not many people mention about this province. What is unique about Surin is its Khmer influence and heritage as well as its food. We will be writing more about Surin soon.
