The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It is one of the largest mosques in the world and serves as a key place of worship for Friday prayers and Eid prayers. The mosque is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, who played a crucial role in its establishment.
When we reached Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, we had to go through a tunnel complex to enter the mosque. The tunnel complex is fully air-cond.
To enter the Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, please follow the dress code. Respect the law as well as the religion where ever you travel, this is what we do.
As you enter the mosque, you will be mesmerised by the beauty of the Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
Some of the key features of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque include:
Architecture and Design:
The mosque showcases a fusion of architectural styles, drawing inspiration from various Islamic civilizations. It incorporates elements from Mughal, Ottoman, and Fatimid architecture, among others. The use of white marble and intricate floral designs contributes to its stunning aesthetics.
Grandeur and Size:
The mosque is massive in scale, covering an area of over 30 acres. It can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall is adorned with the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet and features seven crystal chandeliers, including one of the world’s largest.
Chandelier:
The mosque features seven magnificent crystal chandeliers. The largest is 10 metres across, 15 metres tall and weighs 12 tonnes. There are two smaller versions of the same design, also located in the main prayer hall. These weight 8 tons each and made by Faustig of Munich.
Carpet:
The main prayer hall houses the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. The carpet was made by third-generation carpet maker and artist Dr Ali Khaliqi. The predominantly wool, single-piece carpet is 5,700 square meters and was hand-crafted by approximately 1,200 artisans.
Minarets:
The mosque has four towering minarets, each standing at a height of over 100 meters. These minarets contribute to the grandeur of the mosque’s exterior.
Courtyards and Reflecting Pools:
The mosque is surrounded by beautiful courtyards and reflective pools. The pools not only enhance the visual appeal of the mosque but also serve a functional purpose by providing a cooling effect.
Interfaith Dialogue:
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is known for promoting interfaith dialogue and cultural exchange. It welcomes visitors of all nationalities and religions, offering guided tours to provide insights into Islamic culture and heritage.
Open to the Public:
While mosques are primarily places of worship, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors as well. However, visitors are expected to dress modestly, and women are required to cover their heads.
Islamic Art and Calligraphy:
The mosque features stunning Islamic art and calligraphy throughout its architecture. The intricate designs and calligraphic inscriptions showcase the rich artistic heritage of the Islamic world.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is not only a religious site but also a cultural and architectural landmark, attracting visitors from around the world. It stands as a symbol of the cultural and religious diversity embraced by the United Arab Emirates.
