A Visit to the Hyogo Daibutsu Great Buddha

Kobe, Japan, is renowned for its delicious Kobe beef, stunning port area, and vibrant nightlife. But nestled amidst the bustling city is a hidden gem offering a moment of peace and reflection: the Hyogo Daibutsu, also known as the Great Buddha of Kobe.

I visited Kobe twice before this trip and hence I decided to stay in this quiet and beautiful city. The Hyogo Daibutsu or Great Buddha is one of the places that I wanted to visit in Kobe.

Housed within the Nofukuji Temple, the Hyogo Daibutsu is an impressive sight. Standing at a towering 11 meters (not including the pedestal), this bronze statue is a powerful symbol of Buddhism in the region.

A Rich History

The Nofukuji Temple itself boasts a long and fascinating history, dating back to 805 AD. Founded by the revered Buddhist monk Saicho, the temple has weathered centuries of change. The Hyogo Daibutsu, however, is a relatively recent addition. The first statue was constructed in 1891 by a wealthy merchant, serving as a beacon of faith during a time of growing Western influence.

Sadly, the original statue met an unfortunate end during World War II. Due to metal shortages, it was dismantled and melted down for the war effort. However, the spirit of the Hyogo Daibutsu persevered. In 1991, a new and even larger statue was erected, allowing visitors to once again experience the grandeur of this sacred figure.

A Tranquil Escape

The walk to the Nofukuji Temple is a world away from Kobe’s bustling energy. Located in a quiet residential and factory area, the temple grounds offer a sense of serenity. Here, you can admire the intricate details of the Hyogo Daibutsu, seated serenely on a lotus flower – a representation of enlightenment in Buddhism.

The temple itself is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese architecture. Take some time to wander the grounds, soak in the peaceful atmosphere, and learn more about the history of the temple and the Hyogo Daibutsu.

Planning Your Visit

The Nofukuji Temple and the Hyogo Daibutsu Great Buddha are open to the public for free. Easily accessible from JR Hyogo Station with a short walk, it’s a perfect stop for a quiet afternoon or a unique cultural experience.

I took a long walk that takes around 30 minutes from Kobe Chinatown. It is not near any train station and walking means I walked pass the local neighbourhood and the surrounding area.

The annual Hyogo Daibutsu Matsuri (Festival of Enlightenment) held on May 9th and 10th is a vibrant event to experience if you happen to be visiting Kobe during that time.
