St. Michael’s Cathedral Sakon Nakhon

Our journey continues to the Tha Rae district of Sakon Nakhon province, St. Michael’s Cathedral is a truly remarkable sight that stands out in a country predominantly known for its Buddhist temples. Yes, we have covered many stories about temples and only handful on Churches in Thailand.

ST MICHAEL

This beautiful cathedral isn’t just a place of worship; it’s the heart of Thailand’s largest Catholic community and a testament to a unique history of cultural migration.

This area is huge and plenty of spaces for parking, you can also walk to other historical attractions nearby from here.

St. Michael’s Cathedral

The story of the Tha Rae community begins in the late 19th century when Catholic Vietnamese immigrants fled persecution and settled in the area. They brought with them their faith and a touch of French colonial influence, which is still visible in the town’s buildings and the cathedral itself.

The cathedral’s architecture is a fascinating blend of styles, with a striking design that resembles a large boat or “Noah’s Ark,” symbolizing the journey of the community to their new home. Inside, the floor plan is cone-shaped, with the altar at the center, a unique and modern design.

Visitors can admire the towering bell tower and a prominent sculpture of St. Michael the Archangel holding a spear, symbolizing God’s triumph over evil. The grounds also feature sculptures of Mary and Joseph and a cave scene representing the resurrection of Jesus.
