This is the most dangerous temple in Thailand. It is call the Wat Phu tok located in Bueng Kan, Northeast Thailand. I didn’t make it up but the name was given by many Youtubers who visited this place.

Its name, “Phu Tok,” literally translates to “lonely mountain.” It’s not the kind of danger you’ll find in a horror movie, but a thrilling, and at times terrifying and physical challenge as  monks built a series of wooden staircases, ladders, and walkways, clinging to the side of the rock face.

Here some information about this place. The temple’s founder, a monk named Ajahn Juan, was drawn to the mountain for its rugged terrain and dangerous wildlife, including tigers and snakes, which he saw as ideal for meditation and overcoming fear. Are there still tigers? Nope but there are still snakes and bats around.

I rented a car from Udon Thani International Airport. Drove it to Nong Khai and drive it to here. You can easily find this place at Google Map.

I came to this place with my cousin and we had no guide. There is no entrance fee and we just followed the rest.

There is a map showing the entire Wat Phu Tok. It is helpful once you are up there.

The climb is a pilgrimage in itself, with seven levels representing the seven stages of Buddhist enlightenment. The first few levels looks easy but as you ascend, the challenge and the fear builds. The most famous and most heart-pounding part of the journey is the sixth level.

To be honest we got lost on Level 4 and Level 5 and accidentally, we went up to Level six. I have no clue where is Level seven but on level six, it is already an adventure!

Here, a narrow wooden plank walkway wraps almost entirely around the mountain, with a sheer drop of up to 300 meters below. The planks can be rickety, the handrails wobbly, and the only thing separating you from a potentially fatal fall is a few feet of wood anchored into the sandstone.

The reward for conquering your fear and making it to the top is a breathtaking panoramic view of the lush, green landscape of Bueng Kan. It’s a place where the thrill of adventure and the serenity of a spiritual journey collide, making it a truly unique experience.

There is also a small temple near Level 5 linking thru a small wooden bridge. I saw people praying there too and you can take a great shot of Wat Phu Tok from this temple.
