The Buddha with Seven Headed Naga at Wat Tham Pha Daen

In the Phu Phan Mountains of Sakon Nakhon province, Northeast Thailand, lies a hidden gem, Wat Tham Pha Daen. From Google photos, what we can see is the The Buddha with Seven Headed Naga at Wat Tham Pha Daen.

Wat Tham Pha Daen

I decided to visit this temple on my second last day in North East Thailand. It was a very hot afternoon, temperature in the mid 30 degree Celsius. It is not a great time to be outdoor but I have decided to check out Wat Tham Pa Daen.

You can’t drive all the way up to the montain so I had to pay for the tuk-tuk to ferry me all the way up.

At Wat Tham Pha Daen, you’ll spotted large statue of the Buddha being protected by a fierce looking 7 headed Naga dragon/serpent. This statue is called the Naga Prok Buddha (พระพุทธรูปนาคปรก). This awe-inspiring sculpture stands 19 meters high. And from head to tail, it stretches an impressive 139 meters, the tail coiling protectively around the Buddha in 3 layers and then creeping along the crevices of the cliff.

Among the most popular attractions at Wat Tham Pha Daen are the sandstone carvings. In one of the pavilions, there is a stone wall with carvings of the Buddha in different poses.

The pavilion also contains ancient trees, teak wood carvings of Buddhist scenes and traditional Thai life. This temple is huge and I didn’t really finish exploring the temple as I had to return to Udon Thani to fly back to Malaysia via Bangkok.

Wat Tham Pha Daen isn’t just a place to see; it’s a place to feel and a must visit at Sakhon Nakhon, Northeast Thailand.
