Statue of Izumo no Okuni 出雲の阿国 Kyoto

At the district of Geisha, Kyoto history is almost everywhere. At the least expected area, near the entrance of Gion Shijo train entrance, erected a beautiful statue by the banks of Kamogawa River (鸭川). It is near the Shijo-Ohashi Bridge (North). It is the Statue of Izumo no Okuni 出雲の阿国 Kyoto.

Who is Izumo no Okuni 出雲の阿国 ? Born in 1572, Izumo no Okuni 出雲の阿国 is the originator of kabuki theatre. She was miko at the Grand Shrine of Izumo (as believed) who began performing this new style of dancing, singing and acting at the dry riverbeds of Kyoto.

If you are taking a train from Osaka or Kobe, take the exit near the Shijo-Ohashi Bridge(North) at the Gion Shijo station and you will spot the Izumo no Okuni 出雲の阿国 statue nearby.
