St Joseph’s Cathedral Notre Dame of Hanoi
If you are traveling in the Old Quarters of Hanoi (Hoan Kiem), you are up for a treat. You will be amazed by the beautiful French style buildings. Take a walk in Hoan Kiem, there are many places of interests to visit. One of them is St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral is a church located on Nha Tho (Church) Street in Hoan Kiem (Old Quarters of Hanoi). The architectural style of St. Joseph’s Cathedral resembles Notre Dame de Paris. Hence, some called it the Notre Dame of Hanoi.
The church is one of the few structures built by the French colonial government in the region. It was opened in December 1886 and it is the oldest church in Hanoi. It is a Gothic Revival (Neo-Gothic style) church serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hanoi.

Check out the opening hours of the church below as when I was there, they were closed for lunch so I can only observed from outside. There are local food outlets nearby so you can have a cuppa coffee while enjoying the view of the cathedral.
If you are planning to visit all the attractions in Hoan Kiem, I recommend you to take a walking tour. Most of the attractions and places of interests are within minutes of walking. I spent almost a day venturing Hoan Kiem and I enjoyed it. You can always take breaks in between in having coffee in one of the many amazing cafes in the district. St Joseph’s Cathedral is a must visit place in Hanoi.
