Heng Kee Bakuteh PJ Old Town
There is one bakuteh in PJ (Petaling Jaya) that needs no introduction, the PJ Old Town bakuteh or Heng Kee bakuteh. Since I don’t stay in the PJ area, I seldom venture to this part of Kuala Lumpur. That’s why it took me such a long time to finally try this popular bakuteh joint.
It is located at the intersection of Jalan 1/9 and Jalan 1/10 in a house converted restaurant and they only opened for dinner. If you know the history of bakuteh, you know that bakuteh is meant for breakfast.
There is a good reason why this restaurant is so popular and it all goes down to the food. The food is good and that is why people keep coming back here.
There are two elements for a good bakuteh, the pork and the soup. I always prefer to have bakuteh in a bowl rather than claypot and without the mushroom or the vegetables. The extras will only add more flavours to the soup so you can’t really taste the original taste of the soup. Simple is good sometimes.
Their soup is light but flavourful. It is different than Klang’s version of thick soup and Singapore’s version of light soup but only pepper-ish flavour. To be frank, this is enjoyable and that’s why they have regular customers who keep coming back.
I ordered the usual side dishes for bakuteh, a bowl of taufupok (fried beancurd) and also a plate of lettuce.
This is a simple oyster sauce lettuce that is one of the popular dishes that goes along with bakuteh. Most of the bakuteh restaurants in Klang Valley recommend this vegetable dish as side order. This is steamed lettuce topped with oyster sauce.
Heng Kee Bakuteh offers simple and yet palatable bakuteh. Thus, I always love a bowl of bakuteh without extra vegetables in it. A bowl of bakuteh should be simple and nice as it had never been complicated before.
