Tokyo is considered as one of the most expensive cities in the world. According to Bloomberg’s World’s Most Expensive Cities this year, Tokyo is the 4th and Osaka took the 5th title while Singapore is the most expensive city in the world.
Is Tokyo really that expensive to travel to? In one of my trips to Tokyo, I recalled how I managed to find cheap eats in the city. I am talking about good food that is less than 1000 Yen (RM 39) in Tokyo.
My first visit to Akihabara was rewarding. I found this restaurant called Katsuya near the Akihabara JR Station. It is small restaurant specialising in Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet).
I ordered two sets, Tonkatsu Curry Set 80g (637 Yen) and Tonkatsu Shrimp Set (810 Yen).
Basically, they use the same deep fried tonkatsu for most of their dishes. For the curry set, the price depends on the weight of the tonkatsu and the pork cutlet was deep fried to perfection and it was complement with the generous amount of Japanese curry. This dish is really good compare to most Tonkatsu places you can find in Kuala Lumpur and the taste is pretty good. The pork cutlet is deep fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Japanese rice is always lovely to eat and this is worth every Yen I paid.
For the Tonkatsu with Shrimp, it is the additional deep fried shrimp and also the soup is the add-on. Remember to sprinkle the lemon before having the pork cutlet and complement it with the mayonnaise sauce.
I won’t say this is the best tonkatsu ever but you need a comfort food for cheap eats in Akihabara Tokyo, Katsuya is an option you can try.
