Roti Taew Nam Phuket Town
Roti Taew Nam in Phuket Town are listed under the Michelin Guide 2019 as the guide book entered the second year and expanded to Phuket and Phang Nga beyond Phuket. This local coffee shop style restaurant is awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand. Bib Gourmand is considered one level lower than Michelin One Star and it is awarded for restaurants offering exceptionally good food at moderate prices. Layman term of this is very good food at affordable pricing and Roti Taew Naw in Phuket Town is one of them.
We reviewed 15 restaurants and street food listed in Michelin Guide 2019 Bangkok Phuket and Phang Nga under a week. We went to five restaurants out of six in Phang Nga and went to another 10 restaurants in Phuket. This is our second review (and there will be 13 reviews coming soon). You can check out the full list of restaurants in our special dedicated page at https://www.placesandfoods.com/themichelinguidethailand
This is the reason why everyone should explore staying in Phuket town for one night for food hunting. There are many restaurants and street food listed in the Michelin Guide Thailand 2019 in Phuket Town.
Roti Taew Nam opens from 7 am until noon but they are usually sold out around 11 am. This is a popular local restaurant and they offer roti canai (or roti prata in Singapore) or known as pancake in the rest of the world.
They offer English menu and you can find all the food, curry and drinks listed in the menu.
We ordered one Roti (pancake), Roti with Egg (pancake with egg), Roti with Banana (pancake with banana) and Massaman chicken curry.
What we like about this place is it reminds us of our ‘mamak’ restaurants in Malaysia. This is a HALAL restaurant.
They used charcoal to cook the roti instead of gas. This means it has higher cooking temperature and the food taste better in general.
The roti comes with a fried egg (set) with sugar and condensed milk. If you like the roti flooded with the curry, please order the curry.
The roti is crispy and we loved it. It feels like eating crispy roti canai and you must complement this with curry or the sweet condensed milk or else it feels a bit plain in taste.
The roti with egg is our ‘roti telur’ and it is crispy with egg. This goes well with the curry like how we eat it at home.
The roti with banana is ‘roti pisang’ and the taste of the banana is subtle. We prefer our version of roti banana than their version.
The massaman chicken curry is flavourful with strong salty taste. If you are big fan of massaman curry, you will truly enjoy this. The chicken is tender and the curry is not that thick and ideal to complement with the roti.
We also ordered the Thai milk tea and Thai coffee. Together with the massaman curry, the bill of our breakfast is less than THB 200.
We find the food here is good and the people here are very friendly and even the other guests who are dining in this restaurant. You can find many locals coming in and out, grabbing quick breakfast before they start their work.
The beauty of the Michelin Guide Thailand 2019 is they include street food like Roti Taew Nam. Many people have this stereotype of Michelin Guide must only include posh or fine dining restaurants in their guide but this is not the case. We enjoy exploring the local restaurants and street food listed in the Michelin Guide Thailand 2019. Some of the local food we tasted are new for us even though we have visited Thailand so many times.
If you plan to stay in Phuket Town, you can consider Ibis Styles Phuket Town. We stayed there for two nights as we explored numerous restaurants and street food in the town. For us to travel around, we rented a car from Thai Rent A Car and driving and finding a car park in Phuket town is easy and convenient.
