There is one popular crispy deep fried pork knuckle restaurant in Hatyai and it has been around for decades. Many Malaysians will call it ‘half hill restaurant’ and the actual name is Bon Khao Restaurant in Hatyai Hill.

We visited Bon Khao Restaurant in 2001 during our first trip to Hatyai and that is 18 years ago. Bon Khao Restaurant is still the same and do visit here in the evening for the sunset view.

Let’s check out some of the food we ordered for our dinner.

You can find this dish in most Thai restaurants in Malaysia. The most important part is the freshness of the seabass with the strong flavours from the spicy lime juice. This complements well with the rice.

Instead of the usual tom yum goong, we ordered the Spicy Chicken Soup with Tamarind Juice and Herbs. The soup is spicy with sour taste from the tamarind juice and this is tummy warming soup.

This is the superstar dish of this restaurant. Their version of deep fried pork knuckle is crispy on the outer layer while the meat is still tender. They still maintain the quality of this dish after so many years.

Creamy green curry with chicken cutlets, best compliments with the white rice.

For spicy lovers, you must order Stir Fried Pork with Red Curry paste and Basil Leaves. The stir fried pork is tasty with the taste of the spicy red curry paste with the fragrant of basil leaves. This goes well with white rice.

Overall, Bon Khao Restaurant still offer probably the best deep fried pork knuckles in the city while the food taste is still good. The food prices might be high compare to others but it is still worth visiting the restaurant.
