Forget your average fish-in-a-glass-box experience. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is less an aquarium and more a full-blown, jaw-dropping underwater metropolis! If you’re heading to Japan’s tropical island paradise, a trip to this marine wonderland in the central part of Okinawa is a non-negotiable must-do.

After years of planning, we finally visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. We stayed in Naha and there are three options to visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium;

1. Self Drive

2. Take Bus

3. Join Local Tour

We chose to join Local Tour via KKDAY as it includes Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium with other activities on a reasonable pricing. The tour allow us to visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium for four hours which is sufficient.

We did a full Youtube VLOG and you can watch it below.

Since we were there during summer, it was hot and from the main door to the entrance, you need to walk around 10-15 minutes.

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium Tickets:

For Adults it is 2140 Yen per person, you can get it on the spot or online.

The Main Event: The Kuroshio Sea Tank

You’ve seen photos, but honestly, nothing prepares you for the sheer, breathtaking scale of the Kuroshio Sea Tank. It’s one of the largest in the world, holding a staggering 7,500 cubic meters of ocean water. But what truly makes it special?

The Big, Gentle Giants

Meet the stars of the show: the majestic Whale Sharks and the graceful Manta Rays!

Imagine standing in front of an acrylic window (60cm thick, by the way—talk about heavy-duty glass!) that stretches 22.5 meters wide, and seeing a creature the size of a bus glide past. The whale sharks here are absolute units, but they are peaceful filter feeders, so don’t worry about the smaller fish becoming a snack!

They only display one whale shark and the rest are kept in breeding tanks. They use to showcase all the whale sharks in the past. However, the view here is still breathtaking.

Pro Tip Alert! Don’t miss the feeding times (usually 15:00 and 17:00). Watching the massive whale sharks assume a vertical position to gulp down their food near the surface is one of the most unique and thrilling things you will ever see. It’s like watching an aquatic ballet with mega-stars!

More Than Just a Big Tank!

While the Kuroshio Sea Tank is the showstopper, the aquarium journey is brilliantly designed to take you on a complete “Dive into Okinawa’s Sea,” starting from the surface and descending into the mysterious deep.

The Coral Sea Tank: Before the deep sea, you’ll be wowed by the brilliant colors of the open-air Coral Sea Tank. It’s flooded with natural light and showcases a thriving ecosystem with real, live coral that has been cultivated for over a decade. It’s a true slice of a vibrant Okinawan reef!

The Deep Sea World: Venture into the dark, mysterious depths where bioluminescent creatures and rare species live. It’s a chillingly beautiful look at marine life adapted to the high-pressure, low-light environment of the ocean’s floor.

The Aqua Room: Find the hidden gem! This small viewing dome/tunnel lets you look up through the water, giving you the sensation of standing on the seabed as fish (and rays!) glide directly over your head. It’s perfect for a surreal selfie!
