Takayama Old Street Famous Hida Kotte Ushi Japan

We visited Takayama as part of the Takayama and Shirakawago Day Trip. We were given time to explore the Takayama Old Street for some souvenir and taste some of the street food. One of the must try food is the famous Takayama Hida Beef. The Hida Beef is considered one of the top beef in Japan and it is said on par with Kobe beef. There are a couple of food stalls selling Hida Beef at Takayama Old Street and one of them is the famous Hida Kotte Ushi.

The Hida Kotte Ushi is located at 34 Kamisannomachi, Takayama. You can easily spot the beef sushi stall with a long queue. We were there during winter and it was nice queuing up during the cold weather.

There were many locals and tourists queuing up for the Hida Beef Sushi and their menu is pretty simple. There are only four sets available and they are Set A, B, C and X. We chose the Set C for 1000 Yen.

The Set C comes with three pieces of Hida Beef Sushi Medium Rare and they are Ginger Soy Sauce Hida Beef Sushi, Salt Hida Beef Sushi and Gunkan Hida Beef with dried seaweed with fresh egg sushi. The three pieces of Hida Beef sushi is served on a huge rice cracker.

For those who are not familiar with medium rare beef means it is not fully cooked and it is rare in the middle of the piece of the beef. You can taste the original taste of the beef while the texture is firm.

The Ginger Soy Sauce Hida Beef Sushi comes with hints of the soy with ginger aftertaste, Salt Hida Beef Sushi enhances the flavour of the beef and Gunkan Hida Beef with dried seaweed with fresh egg sushi is creamer and enjoyable. You will end that crispy rice cracker and that is the reason you should order Set C for three pieces of Hida Beef Sushi.

On top of the Hida Beef Sushi at Hida Kotte Ushi, there are stalls offering grilled Hida Beef as well as sake shops at Takayama Old Street.

Please take note that due to the climate change, it won’t be snowing everyday at Takayama even during winter. It is all about your luck and the weather on that day.
